Always a popular choice for Christmas time this Dickensian tale rich in story line and character is further enhanced by a musical score from one of the giants of Broadway and Disney musicals Alan Menken, providing the audience with a real treat. Performances on stage from a formidable principal line up were superbly well supported by an ensemble that delivered top quality musical theatre entertainment.

Each scene and musical number was powerful and enthralling as the story of Ebeneezer Scrooge unfolded with passion, humour and sheer brilliance. In the role of Scrooge Alistar Jolliffe played the character skilfully as the miserly grouch learned the true meaning of Christmas.; Vocally strong with excellent diction which combined with clever characterisation made for a believable Scrooge.Jacob Marley (Pat Pryce) dressed as you would expect someone who had been dead for some time provided excellent spookily singing and dancing in ‘Link by Link’ supported by the ghosts in just one of the superbly innovative choreographed and sung numbers.

In their respective roles, Rosie Harvey Christmas Past/Lamplighter, Elliot Beech Christmas Present/Sandwich Board Man and Michael Hinton Christmas Future /Blind Old Had all gave spirited performances. The Cratchit family led by father, Bob (Daniel Parker) was every bit a warm loving individual with Tiny Tim (Connor Dodds), Mrs Cratchit (Sarah Morris) and Martha Cratchit (Eliza Plant) completing the family group.

It is difficult to mention every individual performer and musical number though outstanding and I am sure memorable for the audience was the Fezziwig Party. In characterisation and vivid costume, Nick Owenford oozed vitality with energy and exuberance. The whole company throughout the show provided pace and energy to be admired and applauded.

This inspirational production team are to be highly commended for innovative direction including brilliant flying ghosts, creative choreography, an imaginative set and fantastic lighting and sound effects. Stunning costumes and skillfully applied make up brought perfect added authenticity and a well-balanced orchestra all combined to deliver top quality entertainment. Special praise too for hugely talented young performers who brought their own bit of extra musical theatre magic.

Many congratulations for an amazingly enjoyable production of which all involved can feel immensely proud.
