~~This play within a play marked the return of Circle Players after they had to cancel their last play, and how they have been missed.

Pendon Amateur Light Opera Society is about to stage ‘The Beggars Opera’ and the play starts with the final scene from the Opera.  We then go back in time and see how the production came to be.  And it all seems to be going on.  A Welshman directing, a secret land deal that everyone knows about, the men of the society keep dropping out and lots of fun along the way.

Guy Jones (Jon Holmes) from Leeds arrives for an audition and meets director Dafydd Ap Llewellyn (Lee Tregellis), who I must say kept up his Welsh accent really well from start to finish.  With all the male cast dropping out Guy soon becomes leading man.  Dafydd has produced professionally in Minehead.  Gill Troman who falls for Guy and he for her plays his wife.  Then we have Ian and Fay.  Fay (Clair Tregellis) also falls for Guy. We meet Jarvis (Stan Hubbard) a North Country man who is a bit behind the times, who together with his wife Rebecca (Jean Kerby) know more about the land development than they are letting on.

This Alan Ayckbourn play was well directed by Clive Barlow and even though the set was minimal it really worked.  The scene changes were done at a fast pace which kept the action going.
