This comedy, written by Nick Newman and Ian Hislop, looks at all aspects of amateur theatre and the way that the cast members interact. The Stratford Players are facing losing their theatre so appeal to some Hollywood agents to find them a star to play the title role in their forthcoming production of ‘King Lear’.
The play revolves around Jefferson Steel, a fading American actor whose agent has sent him to star in this play in Stratford. Jefferson thinks this is Stratford upon Avon but really it is Stratford St. John, a small village in Suffolk.
Matt Round is superb in the role of Steel and really got into character, especially the accent. He comes across as a real ‘Star’ expecting everyone to bow down to him. Julie Sadler as director Dorothy was very convincing and she and Matt really worked well together. Jean Kerby played Mary, who really liked Jefferson and Clive Barlow as Denis worked well together and gave us some really good comic moments. George Georgiou played the pompous Nigel, who thought that he should be playing Lear. Jessica Steel was well played by Amy Tregellis and Helen Gilfoyle as Lauren, the sponsor’s wife.
Helen Gilfoyle did a great job directing this play and also for standing in at short notice for one of the cast who was indisposed. The set and lighting were good and you could hear every word.
