As Noda representative I was delighted to be invited along to be on the audition panel for this production as it was very interesting to see how those who were cast had developed and grown into their characters. I know the experienced production team would have spent many enjoyable hours putting the large cast through their paces to produce a show that truly exceeded my expectations. It was an absolutely professional standard from start to finish.

My husband, who attended with me, had not seen the musical before and I briefly explained that the story line mirrors the film of the same name. The plot hinges around three colleagues who work for their bigoted sexist boss Franklin Hart, played with sleazy suave sophistication by James Gordanifar. Doralee is his long-suffering secretary and was played with just the right measure of flirty naivety by Jo Smith. Michelle Worthington played Violet the company’s senior supervisor who would be destined for promotion. Judy is the inexperienced girl in the office complete with new job nerves, played by Rachel Richards. Lastly Beth Hunt played Roz, the bossy longstanding office manager, who we recognise is the only devoted staff member. She absolutely adores Franklin, turning a blind eye to his bad behaviour.

The fast pace of the scenes ensured the audience couldn’t wait to find out what happened next. It’s quite a complex storyline for a musical comedy especially the fantasy, hospital and hostage elements, so I’m not going to elaborate and totally give the plot away. However, all these elements appeared to be expertly achieved with good use of the large stage and impressive scenery. Maybe now is also the time to compliment the colourful period costumes, which were eye catching in style and perfectly chosen.

Without exception the principals were outstanding throughout this perfectly cast production, with their strong characterful performances, well supported by a large ensemble. Without mentioning each individual by name there were some very entertaining cameo roles that are always needed to complete the story line, with many of these bringing key elements to enhance and complete the plot.

Allow me next to praise the well-known musical numbers that were fabulously executed throughout, as many contained an array of original choreography by Arron and Shannon.

The many years of experience from Stephen as a director, plus the talented musical direction from David and Callum ensured BMOS produced a potentially award-winning crowd pleaser. You should all be immensely proud to have been a part of the show.

The Midland Concert Orchestra, directed by Phil Johnson, did not overpower the cast at any point as can often be the case. As a result of this it complimented the clarity and harmonies throughout the varied musical numbers. The most memorable for me were, 9to5, Backwoods Barbie and the expressive powerful Get Out and Stay Out.         

Congratulations to all concerned and well done on a fast-moving and entertaining evening of musical theatre. We enjoyed it immensely as did many of the audience. On the night I attended the cast were given a well-deserved standing ovation from the dress circle.
