This was a nostalgic journey in music representing the Society’s 90 years of staging operettas and musicals, and what a fantastic evening it turned out to be as they featured song and dance from these shows. It began with a selection of fab G&S songs and choruses and then moved on to the world of operetta featuring the music from Strauss and Offenbach operettas. Vienna came next in the spotlight with music from Merry Widow (with the obligatory “Grisette” and “Women” songs!), Gypsy Princess and The Land Of Smiles. A tour of Britain via Brigadoon, Valley Of Song, and Merrie England lead us to musical selections from modern shows Fiddler, Fair Lady, Dolly and Oklahoma! Former society Producer George Hutchison compered the show with historical facts and amusing anecdotes and, as the show progressed, behind the assembled company sitting on stage, there appeared a series of slide photographs of all the years’ shows, where the audience’s memory was tested in attempting to identify faces from the past! It was good to see the Society’s oldest serving member, NODA Past President Jack Underwood, singing along with the company and actively performing in one number! This was a great night of nostalgia and it is many congratulations to BFAOS on their 90th Anniversary.
