I couldn’t think of a better way for Wombwell & District Amateur Operatic Society to celebrate their 90th anniversary, than to present their latest concert, 90 - Not Out!
It was so nice to see such an appreciative and near capacity audience for this well put together concert, celebrating all things musical theatre. The show took the audience through the history of the society with songs from shows that they have performed in their impressive 90 years. From Gilbert and Sullivan to Sunday Morning Fever, there was something for every taste.
A particular highlight for me were Some Enchanted Evening performed by Malcolm Hyde. His rich baritone voice was just the right tone for this song. However, the performance of the night for me came with the societies ‘Merry Widows’ and their trio. Anne Wakeford, Josephine Owen and Lois Pass have all played this famous role in a Wombwell production and it can only be described as a singing masterclass.
I must congratulate Musical Director, Marilyn Sykes, as the harmonies, especially in This is the Moment and One Moment in Time were an absolute delight to listen too. Sue Gent and Josephine Owen, should be justifiably proud of the show they jointly directed.
It was a great honour to present NODA Long Service awards to Kimberley Cooper for 10 years and Sue Gent and our very own Les Smith for 55 amazing dedicated service to the amateur stage.
Thanks to all at Wombwell for a very enjoyable evening, and here’s to the next 90 years.
