This story of how three secretaries in an office in America rebel against their domineering and chauvinistic CEO by kidnapping him, and running the office very successively in his absence, is full of wonderful songs and dialogue, as one would expect when the music and lyrics are by the irrepressible Dolly Parton. Gill Matheson (Violet Newstead, Office Supervisor), Erin Smith (Doralee Rhodes, Personal Sectary to CEO) and Laura Ferguson (Judy Bernly, returnee to work new start) were excellent as the three main characters delivering the pathos, strength and humour in each of the characters equally well. Caroline Fenwick, as the CEO’s lovelorn Admin Assistant Roz Keith was hilarious especially in her number “Heart to Hart”. Bill Atkinson as CEO Franklin Hart relished in the role more and more with each despicable act inflicted on his workers and his come uppance brought much laughter from the audience. Alan Matheson (Joe the young office accountant) who brought romance into Violet’s life – their duet “Let Love Grow” was delightful – gave a strong performance. Strong support was given by Ali Niven (Margaret, the office drunk) and Brian Mathieson (Tinsworthy, Chairman of the Board). Singing and dancing by the principals and chorus were of a high standard – I particularly liked Doralee and ensemble’s “Backwoods Barbie”, Violet and ensemble’s “One of the Boys” and of course the wonderful “9 to 5” enthusiastically delivered by the full company. Thank you Opus TC for a delightfully entertaining show.
