Franklin Hart, Jr. played, with enthusiasm, by Mark Grieve, states early in this show that teamwork is everything and so it proved with LADAMA’s production of 9 to 5 the Musical. The three leading ladies Violet, Judy and Doralee played ably by Kirsten Breeze, Erin Gilliland-Paterson and Shona De Rose complimented each other in looks, attitude and singing styles. Their trio ‘I Just Might’ was excellent. The three come together again later in the first half when they dream about how they will get their revenge on Franklin Hart Jr. Director Margaret Paul and choreographer Donna Ewing kept things moving well throughout the production but especially in this part which could have dragged if allowed. Roz Keith played by Ali Fleming kept the teamwork element going being the only one on stage and in the audience on the side of Franklin Hart Jr. The main characters were well supported by the minor principals Naill King as Joe, David J Mutch as Dick and Andrew Gardiner as Dwayne Rhodes and the well-rehearsed chorus. Particular mention must be made of Bill Paul, awarded his 60 year NODA medal this year, putting in an appearance as JR Ewing – sorry, Russel Tinsworthy - in a very white suit and stetson. It takes experience to carry this off. Musically, Suzanne Stewart, MD and the orchestra provided excellent accompaniment. The off stage team dealt well with the multiple changes and props. Final mention has to be made of the back stage team who provide the best cakes this reviewer has had at a show interval.
I am indebted to my wife both for undertaking this review on my behalf, and also for sampling the patisserie for which LADAMA has become so well known!. Mike Pendlowski.
