This uplifting musical comedy is the award winning adaptation of the 1980 film based on a book by Patricia Resnick, with music and lyrics by renowned country and western singer Dolly Parton. Rob Barclay, making his debut as Director with BOS and Helen Graves, also making her debut as Producer, deserve much credit for the exceedingly high standard of this production. A medley of musical styles is included in this show and Musical Director Lynne Loose ensured they were all expertly delivered. Choreographer Clare Allen devised various superb routines to accompany the toe tapping numbers that added sparkle to this production. The large well-disciplined cast co-operated to help produce a slick and smooth running show by being involved in several of the set changes. There were three outstanding female leads – Kim Sands as Violet Newstead, Helen Graves as Doralee and Clare Allen as Judy; this formidable trio led the united opposition to deal with their sexist, egotistical, lying, hypocritical bigot of a boss - Franklin Hart, played by Christian Slingsby. Other cast members who contributed competent performances were Natasha Townshend as Roz Keith, who has a crush on Franklin Hart, Rob Callaby as Joe, whose capable vocal contributions were first class and Audrey Young - her playing of Margaret “the office lush” was spot on. On behalf of your audiences I congratulate and thank everyone who was involved in this show, this was definitely inspirational amateur theatre.
