Beeston Musical Theatre Group’s production of 9 to 5 The Musical brought Dolly Parton’s lively, feel-good show to the Duchess Theatre, Long Eaton. Set in the late 1970s, the musical follows three office workers who take revenge on their sexist, egotistical boss and transform their workplace for the better. With its mix of comedy, catchy country-inspired songs and a message of female empowerment, this show offered plenty of fun moments, colour, and energy.
With three leading ladies Emily Owen (Doralee Rhodes), Sara Evans-Bolger (Violet Newstead) and Brogan Jones (Judy Bernly) worked very well together as a team, showing great chemistry and an understanding of their own and each other’s characters. Emily captured Doralee’s Southern charm beautifully, her strong voice shining particularly in “Backwoods Barbie.” Sara gave a confident and animated portrayal of Violet, bringing both humour and heart to the role, while Brogan’s transformation from nervous newcomer to independent woman was believable and well delivered, especially in her powerful rendition of “Get Out and Stay Out.” Together, these three formed a solid and engaging trio at the centre of the show.
Craig Arme gave a wonderful performance as the villainous Franklin Hart, balancing comedy and arrogance perfectly. His timing and delivery of Hart’s outrageous comments were spot-on and drew the right reaction from the audience. Joseph Straw as Joe brought a nice sincerity to his role, particularly in his duet “Let Love Grow.” Charlotte Drewett-Holden was excellent as Roz Keith, offering great comedic moments and energy, especially in “Heart to Hart.”
Among the supporting cast, Thomas Judt (Dick Bernly), Arden-Caspar Jennison (Josh Newstead), William Howarth (Tinsworthy), John Hand (Dwayne Rhodes), Jodie Lakin (Missy), Carrie-Anne Corner (Kathy), Claire Farrand-Preston (Margaret), David Artiss (Bob Enright), El Brown (Maria), Marie Nelson (Detective), Bobby Hughes (Doctor), Jaye Bonser (Candy Striper) and Elsa Kitching (New Employee) all contributed well to the overall production.
There was a strong ensemble who worked together effectively, with lots of energy throughout. The principal dancers also deserve praise, the routines were lively and well executed, adding to the visual appeal of the show. The choreography by Fiona Cook was effective and well supported by dance captains Abi Stott-Marshall and Alice Cammell.
Director Beth Yearsley kept the show moving at a nice pace and made good use of the stage space and Musical Director Adam Wright led the band confidently, achieving a good sound balance and that distinctive Dolly Parton country feel. The technical side of the production was also handled well, with sound by Dave Dallard and Jack Clark giving great balance between vocals and band, and lighting by Dave Martin and Rachel Elphick adding the right atmosphere. Katie Bird (Production Manager and Stage Manager) and Naomi Batley (Production Assistant) ensured that things ran smoothly backstage.
This was a well delivered and enjoyable production of 9 to 5 The Musical, it certainly delivered on fun, humour, and spirit.
A special mention should also go to BMTG’s charitable efforts during this run, raising money for The Adam Barry Foundation, The Adam Barry Music Fund at Friesland School, and Treetops Bereavement Counselling Service.
We look forward to BMTG’s next show Anything Goes.
