Broughty Ferry Amateur Operatic Society led by a new Production Team in Director Rebecca Smith-Waghorn, Musical Director Colin Grant, and Choreographer Drew Knox presented a well-received production of 9 to 5 The Musical that has clear strengths in its leading trio.

9 to 5 The Musical is a vibrant, feel-good musical that bursts with humour, charm, and heart.

From the moment they step onstage, the chemistry between the three leading ladies was unmistakable. Lisa Gould (Violet Newstead), Fiona McRobbie (Judy Bernly), and Paige Morrison (Doralee Rhodes) formed a compelling trio whose connection drives the emotional core of the show. Their scenes together were electric, funny, sincere, and beautifully balanced.

Lisa Gould’s performance as Violet was strong. It is unmistakably a role she was meant to play. With sharp comedic timing, a commanding presence, and effortless vocals, Lisa anchored the production with both humour and heart. Her rendition of “One of the Boys” is a standout moment that highlights her versatility and charisma.

Fiona McRobbie’s Judy took the audience on a beautifully paced journey from fragility to empowerment. Her performance of “Get Out and Stay Out” stopped the show with its emotional strength.

Paige Morrison’s Doralee sparkled with Dolly-esque charm, delightfully funny yet deeply genuine, making her portrayal both comedic and heartfelt.

Together, these three actresses created a bond that felt authentic, uplifting, and central to the magic of the production.

Chris Wylie gave a hilariously sleazy yet entertaining performance as the notorious boss Franklin Hart Jr., leaning fully into the character’s ridiculousness. Opposite him, Vicki Lorimer’s Roz Keith was a comic gem. Her bold and quirky “Heart to Hart” drew some of the night’s loudest laughs. David Newton brought warmth and sincerity as Joe, offering gentle counterbalance to the chaos.

Strong character performances also came from Kiera Keesing (Kathy), Gina Douglas (Margaret), Robyn Daly (Maria), Louise Evans (Missy Hart), Euan Smith (Dwayne), Dylan Whyte (Dick), Michael Muir (Josh/Bob Enright), Jacob Dudgeon (Tinsworthy)

The ensemble’s energy was evident, supporting the atmosphere of the major numbers.

The set was simple and straightforward, stripped back but functional, enhancing the comedy of the corporate chaos central to the musical’s world and the scene transitions were slicked and well timed. A brighter, more varied lighting design would have helped give stronger definition to key musical numbers.

This production of 9 to 5 The Musical had real moments of charm, solid character performances and engaging ensemble. A highly entertaining evening.

Well Done BFAOS. Congratulations to all involved.
