When the company burst on stage with the opening number, there was energy and vibrance, from a talent filled cast and some well drilled dances. Then we knew that this evening was going to be special. First time Director Georgie Galloway had it all ticked off with style in this well cast performance. Full of movement throughout and giving interest to every scene. Mark Raison-Sharp, with his excellent orchestra provided the mood and generated a great product on stage, ably supported by Chorus Mistress Jo Kemp, there was some excellent singing from the cast.
The sets were created in house and worked well, the cast and crew managed the many changes with a slickness that showed time well spent in rehearsal before the first night. Matt Cross managed lighting and sound design to show off the production. There were many costume changes, which gave the show a strong image.
The casting was amazing, with many of the cast demonstrating that they had worked hard on their characterisations with many cameo characters displaying their talent throughout the company. The choreography was executed to a very high standard by all involved and gave great pace to the scenes. As Violet, Andrea Wilson was the kingpin of the trio of girls who headed the plot, and what an amazing group they were. Briony Thompson as Doralee and Emmie Wright as Judy worked brilliantly with Andrea’s Violet, with voices, personalities and interactions at a top level. What a joy to watch. And Emma Galley as miserable Roz was a great character study and antidote to the big personalities displayed by that other three.
Joseph Betts played Joe with his lovely mellow voice. And Nick Bird as Franklin Hart, delivered the expected timing and comedy. His interactions with the girls, his powerful vocals all balanced well with the very strong line-up of girls.
This was a show of fun, enjoyment and offering so much for the company. They rose to the challenge, and the audience just responded. It was an evening of pure professionalism, as have come to expect from CSODS with their high standards.
