This was my first visit to Spotlight Theatre, and it was such a pleasure to meet up with the Director and some of the committee and cast in the afternoon before seeing the show in the evening.  9 to 5 The Musical based on the 1980 movie with music and Lyrics by Dolly Parton is a great fun show, and as with all shows requires the dedication of a production team and cast to get it to the stage. A strong principal lineup with Fran Melville as Violet Newstead, Ellie Cooper in the role of Doralee Rhodes and Kathleen Bate playing Judy Bernly ensured their talents shone as they stood up against a very convincing Franklin Hart, Jr played by Roderick MacEachan.  Roz Keith played by Morven Wright had good comedic timing and tried to keep the three strong women on their toes in her own efforts to get closer to Franklin Hart, Jr. The scene in Violet’s apartment was well done and took us on the fantasy tales of how the three women would kill Hart. All supporting roles were well executed and the ensemble who worked across the roles of Consolidated Industries Employees, hospital staff and patients ensured audiences were given a performance of a high standard. No show can get to the stage without the work that goes on behind the scenes and the work of the backstage crew, along with the set, props construction team, set artist, and painters all ensured that their combined efforts worked well for this production. It was the choice of the company to use the performance accompaniment recording which overall worked well. Good lighting and sound enhanced the production, and the audience left the theatre having enjoyed a great show. Well done!
