Heywood Amateur Operatic & Dramatic Society present 9 to 5 The Musical
Music and Lyrics by Dolly Parton
Book by Patricia Resnick
Thank you for inviting me to see your production of 9 to 5. I understand this show
was originally intended for performance before COVID, and it is always special to
see a production finally reach the stage after such a long journey. It was certainly
worth the wait.
This was a strong and enjoyable production, with clear hard work and dedication
visible from start to finish. The direction by Nick Angus guided the piece confidently,
with clear storytelling and strong character moments throughout. There was an
evident effort to do justice to this much-loved musical, and that commitment came
across to the audience.
Musically, the production was well supported under the leadership of David
Abendstern. The vocal numbers were delivered with confidence, and there were
several moments where the harmonies and ensemble work created a full and
energetic sound that suited the show’s style.
Choreography by Jenny Miller and Hannah Gent added vibrancy to the production.
While there were a few moments where timing could have been tightened and some
performers appeared briefly unsure, overall, the dance numbers were enjoyable and
added energy to the stage. With further refinement, these numbers will only grow
stronger.
Stage Management by Steve Brady and team ensured transitions and movement of
set and props were handled smoothly. Scene changes felt organised and efficient,
helping maintain the flow of the performance.
Overall, this was a good production with several moments that reached a
professional standard. There were a few minor pacing issues and some lighting
moments where performers were briefly left in shadow during songs; however, these
were quickly resolved and did not detract significantly from the overall experience.
There were several standout performances on the evening.
Sophie Lord as Doralee Rhodes delivered a well-rounded portrayal. She captured
the spirit of Dolly Parton without turning the role into an impersonation, which is a
difficult balance to strike. Her chemistry with her fellow cast members felt natural,
and her vocals were strong and controlled throughout.
A standout performance came from Kathryn Gorton as Violet Newstead. Kathryn
demonstrated clear character development, taking Violet on a believable journey
from controlled and guarded to confident and empowered. Her performance carried
depth and intention, which was wonderful to watch unfold.
Sarah Thewlis as Judy Bernly brought warmth and innocence to the role. Watching
Judy’s journey — from vulnerable and unsure to finding her strength — was
engaging and enjoyable. Her moments standing up to her ex-husband Dick (played

by Jack Martin) were particularly effective, and her solo vocals were delivered with
confidence.
John Crebbin as Franklin J. Hart Jr. embraced the role fully — so convincingly that I
found myself genuinely disliking the character, which is exactly the goal. His
performance included strong comedic moments and well-timed humour that landed
effectively with the audience.
In supporting roles, Sam Reid (Joe), Scarlet Dickinson (Roz Keith) and Kath
Brady (Margaret) all made strong impressions. Sam provided a steady and
believable love interest, maintaining consistency throughout. Scarlet delivered a
confident portrayal of Roz, bringing bold characterisation and stage presence to her
scenes. Kath’s development within her role was noticeable and well handled.
Heywood Amateur Operatic & Dramatic Society should feel proud of bringing this
long-awaited production to the stage. The commitment from cast and crew was
evident, and the audience clearly appreciated the effort and energy shared.
Thank you again for inviting me — I look forward to seeing what HAODS brings to
the stage next.
