Tonight LAMA embraced the 1970’s world of Consolidated Industries, the sexist, misogynistic workplace of Violet, Judy and Doralee. The performance began with an introduction to the characters in a projection of Dolly Parton on a screen front stage-left of the proscenium.

The set designed by Duncan Milne was minimal but effective. The main elements comprised two large 3-D numerals – the 9 and 5 of the title. These trucked units were put to good multipurpose uses, from indicating inside or outside of the office to end on as filing cabinets, shelves etc.

The three leading ladies worked very well together. Laura Spence as Violet Newstead the head secretary, played the part with confidence, giving a strong vocal performance. Judy Bernley (Rachel Nee) was no less well cast – “Get out and Stay out” being one of the highlights of the show. Stephanie Baillie as Doralee gave a first class performance, seemingly growing in confidence as the show progressed.

Franklin Hart Jr was played with energy and style by Andrew Doig, while his adoring strait-laced p.a. Roz (Rachel Guthrie) made an excellent contrast to the three girls.

Choral singing was of a high standard, under the direction of Robert Nee, whose orchestra, although quite loud at times, was never overpowering thanks to good diction and sympathetic sound operation.  I’m always impressed with the choreography in productions taking place on small stages, and here Arlene Anderson, despite suffering an achilles injury during the rehearsal period, never failed to impress with her inventive choreography.

Well done LAMA and we look forward to your next show!
