This Musical based on the 20th, Century Fox Motion Picture from the book by Patricia Resnick and with Music and Lyrics by Dolly Parton has been a hit with audiences far and wide.
St Ambrose Players took up the challenge of performing this modern musical and they certainly succeeded in giving the capacity audiences a night to remember.
The strong Production Team headed by Beverley Yates, Director and Jennie Barnes, Assistant Director together with Musical Director Wayne Oakes had clearly rehearsed the cast with great expertise and determination in order to reach the high standards expected of this company.
There were some excellent performances in this production, notably, Julie Webster as Violet, Kirsty Chapman as Judy and Alison Griffiths- Barnes as Doralee. These three carried the show at just the correct pace and I have nothing but praise for their characterization, singing and acting skills.
Mark Kendall as Franklyn showed his versatility as the domineering, self-centred and lecherous head of Consolidated Industries and Alison Hampson gave a delightful interpretation of her role as Roz, showing excellent comic timing.
Joe played by Paul Regan was a sensitive performance. I really enjoyed the duet with Violet, “ Let Love Grow”. Simple choreography by Jennie and Beverley was appropriate for the period.
There was an excellent 11 piece orchestra under the Direction of experienced Musical Director, Wayne Oakes who was familiar with this piece having been connected with another production of the same show with another company. He had ensured that all the cast, individual vocalists and ensemble members gave of their best. At times , however, the audience found it difficult to hear the dialogue and lyrics. It was apparent the orchestra was either too large for this particular venue or the volume was too high. This together with microphone problems was distracting.
Congratulations must, once again, go to the Set Design and Construction Team led by Graham Forrest, for the technically challenging set. Backstage crew changed the scenes efficiently and silently and the Props Team dressed the various scenes appropriately, ensuring a very smooth running of the show. Period costumes, wigs, make-up and props helped to recreate the 70’s and I am sure many of the audience felt nostalgic for the era. Ensemble and principals worked very well together and produced a very strong, vibrant and high-energy show and congratulations must go to all involved. Thank you for another very entertaining evening.
