9 to 5 The Musical - with music and lyrics by Dolly Parton and book by Patricia Resnick, is based on the 1980 hit movie of the same name. Set in the late 1970s. this hilarious story of friendship and revenge in the Rolodex era is outrageous, thought-provoking and even a little romantic. Pushed to the boiling point, three female co-workers concoct a plan to get even with the sexist, egotistical, lying, hypocritical bigot they call their boss. In a hilarious turn of events, Violet, Judy and Doralee live out their wildest fantasy – giving their boss the boot! While Hart remains "otherwise engaged," the women give their workplace a dream makeover, taking control of the company that had always kept them down. “Hey, a girl can scheme, can't she?”
The whole production was very well crafted. The integration of the principals and chorus was evident with each member of the chorus creating their own persona.
Despite its length the first act moved at a cracking good pace. The audience around us became so engrossed in the action that they identified with the girls suffering at the hands of the “sexist, egotistical, lying, hypocritical bigot” and nearly booed and hissed. The second act had an air of triumph throughout and all the cast relaxed into their roles. Whilst all the principals were superb and interpreted their characters exceedingly well, the chorus when both singing or dancing, ably supported the principals and added to the whole atmosphere. The audience truly felt they were back in the late 1970s and there was a distinct feeling of nostalgia. Congratulations to Burgess Hill on this superb production.
