Sixty years and still going strong.  And what a wonderful evening’s entertainment Walsall Gilbert and Sullivan Society gave to a full house at their 60th Anniversary Gala Celebrations.

With wonderful chorus singing and solos the audience were treated not only to selections from Gilbert and Sullivan’s operettas but music from past decades starting in the 60’s and ending in the zeros.  From ABBA to Flanders and Swan, each item was performed well by this talented company.  Pamela Robinson did a sterling job of compering the show and when Gilbert and Sullivan numbers came up, she advised the audience of how many times the company had performed that particular production.  I also enjoyed it when, at the start of each decade selection, a group of members came forward and informed us about events from that particular point in time.

I enjoyed hearing Brian Hirst sing ‘Hail Poetry’ and another outstanding item was hearing Vicki Hardy sing ‘Think of Me’ from Phantom.  How the audience enjoyed ‘The Floral Dance’ from Dad’s Army and the whole chorus singing ‘YMCA’. Musical Director Liam Simkins and Ruth Shelley gave a great performance with ‘A Song that Goes Like This’ from Spamalot.  The celebration ended with a rousing chorus of ‘Goodbye’ from The White Horse Inn.

The orchestra, under the direction of Brian Hirst, played well together and the set design looked really effective.

Congratulations to Liam, Pam and Ann for putting together some first-class entertainment.

Happy Anniversary Walsall Gilbert and Sullivan Society and here’s to the next 60.
