I was delighted to review this production, as KatsAct are a Society new to my District, and although I have reviewed them before it was a different experience for me, knowing I was reviewing for myself!
A very good production all round – well-directed, with the young people really invested in the action. Lots of animated faces and good expression, even when the spotlight wasn’t on that individual - lovely to see. I am aware of the many and diverse challenges the company has to deal with, both physical and emotional, but I can truly say there was no sign of anything on stage – everyone performed to a high standard, which you should all be extremely proud of. I also commend the Directorial and Technical teams, plus all the support teams, no mean feat to put on a show like this, I am sure everyone appreciates your input.
The choreography was well within the cast’s capabilities, and I liked the used of grouping rather than straight lines (except when dictated by the action), with various groups doing different things in some places.
Musically, the cast were very aware and there were some good harmonies – the main characters were chosen well, and demonstrated some very mature voices for such a young ensemble.
I liked the use of projections on the back screen, this is definitely the way to go, with the cast moving flats and props within the action, creating a nicely seamless production – which kept the audience attention engaged throughout.
The lighting was suitable for each scene, but I found there were a number of late mic cues, and some where the level was not adjusted correctly until well into a number – which was a shame, as it meant we missed some words at times. Otherwise, I felt sound balance between stage and band was weighted on the side of the band at times, something to be aware of for the future in this venue.
Costumes were generally in keeping with each character, which was very acceptable, a couple of hairdos that hindered the mic placements at times, but nothing really out of place.
I thought everyone was very well cast – lots of good contrasts and relationships. George W (Evan) created a nice character, showing the innocence of the boy, and the realisation that came with growing into his teens – very well acted and sung. I also enjoyed his relationships with the other cast members.
Anya P (Patrice) gave a very mature performance, lots of expression and showing an understanding of the part, a delightful all-round accomplished performance.
Hannah C (Kendra) and Sophie D (Lucy) created a fine partnership, showing the two very different personalities in their portrayals. Kendra was a very quiet, considered young lady, whilst Lucy was the fiery one – good contrasts within the relationship, and fine musicality and singing. Phoenix C, Jess S and Izzy H completed the girls group, and related well with each other, also displaying good singing and dancing skills.
Leo S (Archie) gave a good portrayal of the young man leaning on his supposed disability to get what he wants – showing a well-rounded understanding of the part – again a very well achieved portrayal both acting and musically.
Ed B (Brett) gave a good impression of the character who expected everyone to know him – a very assured performance, and some good breakdance moves. Brett’s boys – Lailah B, Tabitha M-G, Claudia G and Miki P supported Brett well, and gave a lot of attitude to their portrayals – a good grouping.
Sade K-B (Rabbi) showed a warmth of tone and a mature voice – effectively achieved.
The Ensemble of Berry G-N, Charlotte N, Daisy S, Elodie B, Emma R, Isabella F, Macey T, Macy F, Mollie-Mae A, Sophia P, Toby S and Victoria B all fulfilled their roles within the piece – I could tell they were all fully invested with the production and their respective parts, helping to round out a very good show.
My thanks to KatsAct for their hospitality and what was an excellent evening’s entertainment.
