Manchester Musical Youth (MMY) marked its 11th anniversary with a spectacular concert that showcased the depth, diversity, and dynamism of its ever-growing ensemble. This milestone event was not just a celebration of longevity but a testament to the group’s unwavering commitment to nurturing young talent and delivering high-calibre musical theatre. From the very first note to the final curtain call, the afternoon was a vibrant tapestry of musical numbers, many drawn from past productions, each performed with remarkable skill and heartfelt emotion.

What continues to set MMY apart is the sheer vocal strength of its performers. Across the board, the singers displayed an impressive command of technique, tone, and storytelling. Their voices, rich, expressive, and full of character, brought each piece to life, transforming the stage into a kaleidoscope of moods and musical eras. It’s clear that MMY’s success lies not only in its talented individuals but in the collective spirit that drives the group forward, year after year.

The concert opened with the enchanting “Magic to Do” from Pippin, a fitting choice that set the tone for the afternoon. Led by a vibrant ensemble including Freya Gow, Finn Walker, Dominic Smith, Simeon Hope, Teigan Withey, Katie Hyde, Jasper Holden, George Braddock, and Freddie Cummins, the performance was bursting with energy and theatrical flair. Each performer brought their own spark to the number, and together they created a captivating introduction that invited the audience into a world of wonder and possibility.

Following this, the mood shifted seamlessly into the poignant “The Life I Never Led” from Sister Act, performed by Cleo Avanessian. Cleo’s rendition was powerful and deeply moving, her voice resonating with conviction and vulnerability. She commanded the stage with grace and emotional depth, drawing the audience into the character’s inner world with every phrase.

Amelia Leicester then took on the emotionally demanding “She Used to Be Mine” from Waitress, a song that requires both vocal control and raw honesty. Amelia delivered a beautifully nuanced performance, capturing the heartbreak and resilience embedded in the lyrics. Her interpretation was mature and compelling, leaving a lasting impression.

One of the afternoon’s most surprising highlights came with “Why God Why” from Miss Saigon, performed by Harry Connor. Initially, I was curious to see how such a complex and emotionally charged number would be handled by a young performer. But Harry rose to the challenge with remarkable poise and vocal strength. The song demands a deep emotional connection and the ability to convey inner turmoil, and Harry did just that his performance was both technically sound and emotionally resonant.

A delightful trio, Amelia Fairhurst, Isla Cregeen, and Elise Ingram, took to the stage with “I Know It’s Today” from Shrek JR. Their chemistry was infectious, and their harmonies blended beautifully. The number was playful and charming, showcasing not only their vocal talents but their ability to engage with the audience and each other.

What stood out in the first half of the concert was the thoughtful curation of musical eras and styles. Rather than relying solely on contemporary hits, MMY embraced a wide spectrum of musical theatre history. A standout moment was the performance of “Ascot Gavotte” from My Fair Lady, which brought a touch of classic elegance and wit to the programme. The group’s ability to shift between genres and time periods with ease is a testament to their versatility and artistic range.

The second act launched with a bang, diving into the razzle-dazzle of Chicago with “They Both Reached for the Gun.” Charlie France, Minnie Grady, and Sarah Ali delivered a spirited and vocally tight performance, capturing the satirical edge and rhythmic precision of the number. Their stage presence was magnetic, and their movement added an extra layer of polish.

The energy soared even higher with “Mambo” from West Side Story, a number that demands impeccable timing and ensemble coordination. The MMY company tackled it with gusto, executing complex rhythms and dynamic movements with flair. It was a thrilling moment that demonstrated the group’s ability to handle the high-energy pace while maintaining vocal integrity.

One of the most heartwarming segments came from MMY’s youngest members, the Apprentices, who performed “Under the Sea” from The Little Mermaid. These budding performers lit up the stage with their enthusiasm, smiles, and infectious joy. Their group dynamics were delightful, and it was clear that they were having the time of their lives. It’s exciting to think about the future of MMY with such promising talent already emerging.

The afternoon concluded with a stirring rendition of “Finale B” from Rent, performed by the entire company. This final number was a triumph, emotionally charged, vocally rich, and deeply unifying. It encapsulated the spirit of MMY: a community of passionate performers coming together to share their love of theatre. The harmonies soared, the emotion was palpable, and the audience was left with a sense of hope and celebration.

What made this concert particularly special was MMY’s commitment to giving individuals the chance to shine. Whether through solo performances, duets, trios, or full ensemble numbers, each performer was given space to showcase their unique talents. This inclusive approach not only enriches the experience for the audience but fosters growth and confidence among the performers.

In conclusion, MMY’s 11th Anniversary Concert was a joyous, moving, and thoroughly entertaining celebration of youth, music, and theatre. It was a privilege to witness such talent and dedication on display. Thank you once again for the kind invitation, I look forward to seeing what MMY brings to the stage next.
