Betty Blue Eyes is a whimsical, utterly British musical with a deliciously infectious retro Stiles and Drewe score (the team behind Honk! and the new songs for the theatre version of Mary Poppins).
It’s based on the 1984 film A Private Function featuring the late Dame Maggie Smith and Michael Palin, with screenplay by Alan Bennett. Much of his dialogue is retained in the musical. The show is set in 1947 in a small Yorkshire town which, like the rest of the country, bears the scars of the recent war and the rationing that is still in place in Austerity Britain. The only bright spark on the horizon is the impending Royal Wedding of Princess Elizabeth and Prince Philip.
