Under Milk Wood by Dylan Thomas is set in the Welsh village of Llareggub. It starts with the single voice of Mike Watson setting the scene as the villagers are sleeping telling us about their dreams and hopes for the day to come - it was very mesmerizing and draws you into the play.
Directors David Balfour and Michele Arkle have done very well with this play and have a super cast. The stage is built up into different levels with a few chairs and tables, a bar area and pub sign with the cast sitting in different groupings so at first glance you might think there all in the village pub, but in fact as they 'come to life' to tell their tale they are in a house, or the street, or school yard. It gives the effect of everyone knowing everybody's business and they all worked well together. There were 19 in the cast all taking on 3 or 4 different characters playing 49 different roles plus 2 story tellers. Each role had different mannerisms and the village life came over with neighbours chatting, curtains twitching, nagging, comedy, hints of murder and love.
The play was set in the Walled Garden in Lyndhurst, belonging to Jennifer Lane, which was beautiful, with flowers and lawns and the perfect place for an open air production. Everyone brought along a chair and picnic. Sound and lighting was just right as were the costumes.
Well done to everyone envolved.
