Crawley audiences were given a treat this month when COS wowed them with their production of ‘Thoroughly Modern Millie’. A brilliant, crisply choreographed first chorus number had great visual impact. This was preceded by a clever opening by a delightful Millie played by Rachel Marquez who acted, danced and sang throughout superbly. Swiftly paced scenes full of innovative characters that constantly surprised and an enthusiastic chorus performing very appropriate choreography, especially in the tap routines, all added up to a highly watchable production. Add to this a score superbly orchestrated, costumes that were sheer delight, excellent lighting, a back stage crew who obviously knew their craft and a simple but very effective set and this society were on to a winner. Creative performances were given by all this talented cast. Robert Carpenter and Glen Cowlard as Bun Foo and Ching Ho caused much merriment in the audience supported by Nita Graham as Mrs Meers. Kathy Stokes (Muzzy Van Hossmere), Jo Williams (Miss Dorothy) and Adrian Locke (Jimmy) gave good natural performances and sang quite outstandingly but for me the gem of this great production was the moment when Ian Foster (Trevor Graydon) fell in love. My congratulations to the director for inventing so many clever and memorable little ideas which all made this a very special show.
