I haven’t seen this musical for a number of years and was pleasantly surprised to find a refreshingly different Maria, played by Laura Thomas, who was down to earth and less obviously sweet than she is usually portrayed. The children were delightful; confident, completely absorbed in the roles and they sang well. Martin Sampson gave an especially strong performance as George Von Trapp as did Sue Prior in the role of Mother Abbess. The technical side was good and the orchestra provided impressive accompaniment. Despite the fact that everyone knows how the musical ends, the escape of the family through the auditorium whilst the Nuns sang beautifully brought a tear to the eye and this production to a very moving close.
