I have visited many Theatres over the last 60 years but the Gaiety Theatre, Douglas, Isle of Man must be one of the most magnificent I have seen
I was delighted to be invited to a performance of The Mikado by the Manx G & S Society and what a wonderful evening I experienced.
The beautiful curtains opened to a minimal but lovely set and we were treated to “ We are Gentlemen of Japan” by a splendid male chorus. This was a precursor to a memorable evening with some excellent performances by this very talented company.
I have seen “ The Mikado” many times, over the years but this particular production was very special. All principals were in character throughout and I hesitate to mention anyone in particular as the standard of singing and acting by all was excellent.
The ladies and gentlemen of the chorus are very seldom mentioned in any review of a show but in this instance I am pleased to say they were outstanding and I cannot remember hearing a finer group of singers.
The set and scene changes, lighting effects and amplification played a huge part in making the evening a great success and “The Crew” should be congratulated. The costume department ensured that all on stage looked splendid throughout.
Director, Val Cowley and her Production Team, have brought the best out of all the cast, bringing a new dimension to this old favourite yet being faithful to the original premise. The orchestra, under the baton of John Elliott, was excellent and was integral to the evenings success.
This was a show I will remember for a long time and I look forward to my next visit to the Isle of Man. Thank you all for your very warm welcome.
