As usual this was an absolutely charming production and a bit unusual too with the female sex taking most of the main roles. Sally Britton was a brilliant Mikado – feminine but commanding – and Sophie Barnard was a very capable Pish-Tush. Marta Brodzka was super as Pooh-Bah. She was very confident and funny with all her conflicting official positions and a lot prettier than the last Pooh-Bah that I saw. I loved Ko-Ko – Dominic Sly’s dialogue was lovely. He was very “world weary” for one so young. Ellen Sly and Conor Chambers were excellent as Yum-Yum and Nanki-Poo. They looked and sounded good together and the singing was great. Ella Sims and Ann-Marie Cummins provided good support and “Three Little Maids” was a delight. Lucy Baston was a brilliant Katisha. It’s a difficult singing role, but she sang with such style, and her acting was super too. She was a great mix of quite scary and very funny. The chorus was very capable, singing confidently, and being in the right place at the right time – even the very little ones knew every word and movement. The cast was beautifully dressed and the principals’ costumes were extremely good. The set was simple but effective and changed easily. Wendy South and Rachael Thorpe must have worked hard with the cast to achieve such a good semi-traditional G&S.
