It was my privilege and great pleasure to witness a wonderful interpretation of the classic Little Mermaid Jr. at the hands of Gateshead Musical Theatre Company’s Junior Section. The Show had everything you could wish for in this piece of magical family entertainment.
With the support of a Company dedicated to the development of young people in musical theatre, and in the hands of the very talented Directorial Team of Producer Lee Brannigan, Musical Director Donna Graham and Choreographer Andrew Stewart the Show could not fail, and didn’t. An integral part of the success of any show is the quality of the Costumes, Scenery/Props, Sound/Lighting ,and music. If these are not right then the gloss can be taken off a show. I have to say these were all first class and added that something extra special to the theatrical experience for the audience. This was particularly so for the youngest of theatre goers who were present.
Of course the worthiness of all of this would be for nought if the cast did not come up to the mark. This was certainly not the case here as the cast of forty five were wonderful. From Principal to Chorus member alike there was not a weak link be it in the delivery of their lines to the chorus numbers and choreography.
Not to diminish any of the performances there were however some exceptional contributions. Jess Gibson stood out as a believable Ariel, Daniel Burlison’s comedic talents were well displayed as Sebastian, Faye Slater was extremely convincing as the evil Ursula, the duo of Holly Spreadbury and Ellen Ledgerwood (Flounder and Scuttle) were well matched and ideal in the roles, Ellis Fidler added stature and presence as Prince Eric and there were three lovely cameo roles from Jude Waite (King Triton) Rhiannon Hayward (Chef Louis) and Abbie Hulme (Grimsby)
