This was a jolly fine Gilbert and Sullivan production. Even purists would not have been too offended by the costume variations, which - quite frankly - became almost irrelevant as the show progressed. The casting was good, giving an overall balance of talent. All the pairings were most successful, with Adrian Samuel (Marco) and Stewart Patient (Giuseppe) making maximum use of their experience in every department. The same can be said for Suzi Gibson (Tessa) and Louise King (Gianetta). All the remaining principals gave a god account of themselves, with an excellent solo from Boo Wild as the Duchess of Plaza Toro. Pat White's orchestra was excellent. Their playing was always sympathetic, with no member of the cast being overwhelmed at any stage. The choreography was skilfully handled by Alison King. Congratulations must go to Richard Osborne on a well-balanced production. The entrance of Marco and Giuseppe on a Vespa scooter was a master-stroke; perfect for the chosen era and something of a shock for the delighted audience.
