David Hare’s play “The Breath of Life” originally opened in 2002 with Dame Judi Dench and Dame Maggie Smith as the two actors and it is basically the confrontation between Frances, the abandoned wife of a left-wing lawyer, and Madeleine, his long time mistress. There are plenty of sharp words between the two women, but both seem far too civilised to actually get their claws out and attack each other verbally – or physically. This is not my favourite David Hare play but the standard of acting in this production was first class. Mary Mitchell was splendid as the rather repressed Frances and Ros Liddiard was equally convincing as the free-spirited Madeleine. Frances was very reserved and her drab conventional life is contrasted with Madeleine’s seemingly carefree bohemian life style and their journey towards “closure” was gradually achieved.
