Well, this is a fairly new musical ‘doing the rounds’ amongst the amateur companies, and I am delighted that MAOS decided to stage this show as they indeed did a marvellous job!
There was a very good house and they were appreciative of a fine performance. The set was atmospheric and the costumes were as one would expect for the Addams Family. The ensemble supported the principals and were cleverly used and choreographed on stage. The band was on the whole very tight but occasionally overpowered the singing, more a question of microphone balance than anything else I feel.
The principals were strong and there were great performances from Neil Parker as Gomez, Sian Rees as his deathly wife Morticia and from Nia Scourfield who played a wonderfully wizened Grandma. Rhian Hughes captured the character of Wednesday and has obviously perfected the art of withering looks and I was very impressed with the stage presence and confidence of Jack Allen as Pugsley. Andrew Lloyd McQueen was a suitably ‘geeky’ Lucas and Jim Lediard played the role of Mal very well.
Alan Flay was a wonderful Fester and his moments of narration coupled with his love of family and the moon gave a very entertaining performance. However, the stars of the night were undoubtedly Ryan Jenkins as Lurch and Kelly-Ann Allen as Alice Beineke.
Ryan not only looked the part but had obviously worked on perfecting every nuance of Lurch (if indeed Lurch has nuances!) and his crowning moment was the song at the end of Act II. When it comes the performance of Kelly-Ann I merely stand in awe. One has come to expect the very best of Kelly-Ann and she invariably delivers an outstanding performance and this show there was no exception. Every line, every movement, every facial expression was well presented and her vocal ability was, as always, strong.
It was a very entertaining evening and I had with me my two children who are the world’s most critical critics. When my son says, “Daddy, that’s one of the best shows I’ve seen in a while”, you know it’s good. My congratulations to the entire company.
