Sweet Charity Hope Valentine trying to find the love that she yearns for in the weird and slightly wacky world in which she ‘survives’…a story of a dance hall hostess in the 60’s that demands a certain edge and a strong lead. This production had been given a stylised setting in monochrome with the only true colour being that of Charity and her friends, because the piece was set such a stylised way you would expect this to run throughout the piece but for some reason the stylisation was a little haphazard which didn’t quite work out as it seemed to have been planned, although the lift scene and the top of the big wheel really worked well. Casting was very good with the gorgeously innocent ‘Charity’ getting into scrapes before finally falling for the geeky but lovable Oscar, the rapport between these two certainly made the evening. Another pairing that really caught the eye was two young ladies cast as the ‘Cops’…you really gave your all and continued to do so in your various guises throughout the show. The vain Vittorio acted his socks off but the wig was a disaster waiting to happen as were a number of the rather overly tight dresses and unflattering hemlines, these details can really detract from a character no matter how talented the actor, even if the fashion was the mini!
