To celebrate 30 years of Spotlight we were treated to a selection from their shows and were
invited to ‘Put on your Sunday clothes’, Full company in good voice, costumes good, and
movement to make interesting,
On to ‘Some enchanted evening’ (except it was afternoon) and
‘Honey Bun’ before a rousing ‘Anything Goes’ complete with excellent tap routine. A change of
mood into ‘My Fair Lady’ And then an excellent trio of numbers from Fiddler including ‘Rich
Man’, before Annie ‘Tomorrow’ , and to finish the first half and be seasonal ‘We need a little
Christmas’ from Mame. ‘New York, New York’ gave a strong opening to the second half
followed by ‘Chestnuts on open fire’, and then the medley from Buddy Holly, and here the
audience response was great with participation and enjoyment from cast and audience together.
A quieter interlude from their Broadway Bandwagon with a reflective ‘I won’t send roses’ before
the punch and attack from Sweeney Todd with brilliant company harmonies for the Ballad as
well as pies number. Into Thoroughly Modern Millie for two numbers, before a selection from
Bad Girls (a show I have not seen but very lively). A relaxed Summer Holiday (remember the
bus) and then ‘A place called home’ from Christmas Carol. A strong finale of ‘We need a little
Christmas’ to send us home in the right mood and spirit with good memories.
Think it difficult to pick out individuals as a big cast with a lot of talent and huge participation
from so many, some original cast members in this performance and many others in the
audience reliving their glory.
Most amazingly the archives had been trawled for photos of the productions and turned into the
video sets to back the numbers, so very clever and appropriate, sometimes extracts from
original programmes too, most have been great for those who had performed.
A total sell-out with extra seats inserted and an afternoon of sheer pleasure and memories.
