This is the final Pantomime I have reviewed this season, and Bocking Theatre Club did full justice to this production in every which way.Performing this show in half term week was exactly the best time with huge audiences.
A big cast with the” No 1 Baddie” in the guise of Queen Calligula, played brillliantly by Anne May, with her side kick Blackwing who with John Jemison was not such a scary character but totally at the Queen’s beck and call.
The costumes in the production were some of the best I have seen.Queen Calligula’s especially were outstanding and added so much to her character with very effective make up and her overall performance which was very professional.
Dolly Dumpling played by John Ellson, again in fantastic costumes, wigs, shoes the works in fact was a vision in a selection of these, and as the Dame had an instant rapport with the audience, both adults and children alike.I thought he got this part just right!
Fairy Goodheart played by Leah Perry gained confidence as the show progressed, and with Wonderwings played by Linda Clarke, they were the gentle goodies in the production and looked lovely.
I liked Steph Felton’s jolly Danny Dumpling, and also the two hench men Bogwort and Stinkwort from John Hughes and John Page.
Snow White played by Sam Conway and Prince Fredrick with Ellis Galvin worked well together and suited the parts they played.
Danielle Lincoln playing the Princes Man (PM) looked striking in her costume and gave a good performance.
The delightful Dwarfs all re named as TD,Grouchy,Snoozy,Sniffly,Cheerful,Dozy and Disney all did well and their cheerful costumes were super. All looked as if they were absorbed in the plot and sung their musical numbers very well.
Most of the tunes were well known, but I still feel that “High Ho It’s off to Work we Go” is the best theme tune for the dwarfs, and one which still fits in this new script, and is still enjoyed and sung today.
Good company numbers also, and pleasing choreography added so much to the performance.
Moving from one scene to the next was quick, and the cover music and a variety of sounds from the keyboard throughout the show was effective.
Good support from Sue on keyboard and Mark Edwards on drums, and the balance with voices was just about right.
Here and there members of the chorus had a few lines to speak, and not all seemed confident with this?It is essential that the audience can see where and who is speaking, so please don’t be shy and try to hide behind other characters use your moment.Even just one line is important.
Margaret is a very experienced Director and it showed her work had gone into this Production to give the audience a real Panto feel.Well done to Margaret and all the cast and team whether on stage, or the very important backstage crew, chaperones, front of house in fact the whole team.A most enjoyable evening.
