Sister Act

This was another fine production from Erewash. Margaret conveyed the atmosphere of the piece and made good use of all the facilities available at the Duchess, using the space and technical facilities very well. The music was in Dave Dallard’s capable hands, controlling the quite large band well with a good quality sound throughout, enhanced with the use of some nice percussion playing, and achieving a nice balance between the stage and pit.

There was an excellent performance from Dionne Reid as Deloris both vocally and dramatically, combining well with a fine Eddie played by Phil Brookes and Curtis, a strong “baddy“ performance by Adam Richmond. Tracey Renshaw provided a very believable performance as Mother Superior nicely sung and acted, and she was backed up with a great team of nuns displaying many individual characters so very well, not least Ellie Simmonds a lovely young novice.

While the ladies dominate this show in numbers the men certainly held their own as shown by the excellent trio performed by Joey, Pablo and TJ in Act 2 Kheenan Jones, Lewis Haycock and Jack Readyhoof almost stole the show with that one.
The ensemble work was great with the stage filled with music and movement, plenty to watch and admire. The many dance moments were very well performed, great choreography as always with this Society.

The sets used very effective back projection, well designed, which together with efficient stage management enabled very quick and smooth scene changes. The costumes were very good and together with fine lighting enhanced the visual effect. Overall this was great entertainment, enjoyed by an appreciative audience and one that should be enjoyed by many more with a near sell out audience for the rest of the run.
