Based on the 1992 film of the same name, which tells the story of Deloris Van Cartier, who when witnesses her big time crook and fancy man carry out murder, has to hide for her own safety in the unlikely location of a convent.
A strong performance by Kelly Ann Allen as Deloris van Cartier. Kelly Ann was well cast, great vocals and a real sass, however I did think that at times this character slipped into Dolly Parton mode. This performance was ably supported by Sian Rees (Tina) and Ruth Young (Michelle).
Ruth Whelan as the exasperated Mother Superior trying to keep control of the force of nature gave another strong performance creating some nice pieces of theatre. Neil Parker as Officer Eddie Souther gave another strong performance, his comedic talents make his character both funny and appealing, while offering up some beautiful vocals during "I Could Be That Guy".
Chris Johnson as Curtis was the villain of the piece gave a good character performance, his three sidekicks Jack Allen (TJ), Simon Mullins (Joey) and Rhys Davies (Pablo) pulled it out of the bag, especially in the song and dance routine, ‘Lady in the Long Black Dress’.
Rhian Hughes as Sister Mary Robert, Lauren Goldsworthy as Sister Mary Patrick and Nia Scourfield as Sister Mary Lazarus gave strong performances and evidently enjoyed performing these roles.
Monsignor O’Hara was in the capable hands of Jim Lediard and there were good performances from the Ensemble of Nuns, a lot of effort had gone into creating different characters.
The choreography for this show does not require a lot of complicated steps and high kicks, but it does require a great deal of movement, with a high level of energy and enthusiasm and MAOS delivered this in abundance. The production was well costumed with nice colourful touches to the nun’s habits when called for.
Lighting was well designed and operated giving good contrast between the various locations. The set was excellent.
Congratulations must go to Sarah, Susan and Susan on an excellent production celebrating the 75th anniversary of MAOS
Once criticism - The orchestra were obviously enjoying the music for this show; unfortunately they were occasionally too enthusiastic and drowned out the singers.
Massive congratulation to everyone involved.
