Well, what a classic and what a joy to see a youth company taking it on! With wonderful character parts and some lovely ensemble moments it has the potential to be a winner for a large youth company and indeed Port Talbot Youth did not disappoint.
There was a lovely set, some great costumes and the ensemble had been well-drilled in all dance numbers, were well-focused on stage and made a great chorus sound when singing.
The principals were well cast with Alexander Williams playing the role of Don Lockwood beautifully, Bethan Michael as a great Kathy Seldon, Daniel Strogen giving good character to the role of R. F. Simpson, Dylan John as Roscoe Dexter and Ethan Reed as Rod.
Lovely cameo parts were taken by Casey-Jane Lewis as Dora Bailey, Lena Jones as Miss Dinsmore, Kiera Boutwood as Zelda Zanders and Gethin Edwards as the Policeman. A great performance with some lovely comedy was given by James Thomas as the Diction Teacher and he was very funny with the two lead boys in Moses Supposes.
I have to give special mention to Thomas Hearn who gave a wonderful performance as the highly comedic Cosmo Brown, who had the audience laughing out loud and danced and sang splendidly. The other performance that really stood out for me was by Cery Bolton as the fabulous Lina Lamont. She had brilliant comic timing, lovely stage presence and her crowning glory was the song What’s Wrong With Me, in which she gave the performance of the evening.
We all had a great night of entertainment and I know that we all left the building humming the familiar tune… luckily it was not raining!
