Sway Drama Club regularly puts on a compilation show for the Sway carnival week.  Jane Cane’s compilation was loosely based around a radio variety format, with songs and dances interspersed with occasional short sketches (and one bout of “I say, I say, I say...” joke telling).
As usual, there were a couple of star turns from Margaret Soares - in this case Gracie Fields’ “Walter, Walter” and a rendition of the theme from Goldfinger - and some good hoofing (tap and kick) from the ladies.  The company sings well, and I would like to hear them attempting more harmonies; where they did harmonise, there were some lovely textures.
With this sort of format, there will be songs that appeal to some members of the audience and not others.  I must have been listening to a lot of radio at the time that Benny Hill’s “Ernie” was a hit, and whilst Mark Ward’s performance of it was excellent, I’ve already heard it far too often; on the other hand, Flanders and Swan’s “Have some Madeira, M’Dear” (in this case, performed by John Petroff) is something I could listen to again and again.
