St Ambrose Players Director David White. Sherlock Holmes the Panto Crime It must be very challenging to write and direct a successful new script and concept with a title that does not fall into a typical pantomime category but David White has certainly succeeded. All the cast rose to the challenge and performed with great enthusiasm and effort. We were introduced to Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer who was kidnapped from Toyland by the evil Mrs Moriarty. Traditional pantomime characters appeared alongside unusual additions, The experienced John Sangster, as Sherlock Holmes, was excellent and was pivotal to the story, His performance, especially his timing was outstanding. He was ably supported by David Hughes as Dr Watson who seemed to really enjoy his role in something of a change from his Gilbert and Sullivan appearances. Comedy duo, Inspector Tongue( Alison Griffiths- Barnes) and Sergeant Groove( Andrew Sugden), had a great rapport with the children in the audience. Diction by all principals was excellent. This piece is very wordy and most of the “jokes”were over the children’s heads, indeed “Sherlock”had to explain some of them, even to the adults. There were too many straight lines in the chorus numbers and the u.v. scene was disappointing. Costumes and scenery were first class. This company is very lucky to have some very talented people behind the scenes, without whom, no society can exist. There is no doubt that a tremendous amount of hard work has gone into this production and on the whole it was well worth while. Many thanks for this great start to the Christmas festivities.
