Due to other commitments I attended the dress rehearsal of this play so it was difficult to judge what the response might have been with an audience present, but I imagine that on the night there was no shortage of laughter in the hall. I’m not sure if Alan Ayckbourne plays have quite the same appeal that they had when they were written, but the director had put a great deal of thought and research into staging this play and her direction was very good. The individual family members and their relationships were clearly demonstrated by the cast who were all strong. The Entertainers design and build their own sets and nothing is spared despite the limited room on stage. French windows opened onto a most realistic garden and attention to detail was second to none. Appropriate and catchy music was played between the scenes and although a dress rehearsal, cues were picked up and the play had pace.
