The title of Patrick Marber's award-winning comedy informed the more streetwise members of the audience that it concerned playing poker. Since my efforts at playing cards only ever included Snap, Beggar My Neighbour and Gin Rummy I was at a bit of a disadvantage. However, despite rather a lot of prompts. though it must be said this is a 'wordy' play with a lot to remember, nevertheless it was highly entertaining. Set in a small restaurant the scenery for the kitchen/restaurant area, and also later depicting the basement area where the poker-playing took place, was excellent with a great and varied array of props. The lighting and sound effects were very good, too. All six members of the all male cast were really convincing in their respective roles. It would be grossly unfair for me to single any one person out for special mention. I still don't understand much of the ins and outs of poker, but there was much regarding human frailties upon which to ponder. Fascinating.
