PUTTING ON THE BLITZ was a departure from the usual ‘musical’ format as this was a revue, a variety of sketches, solos, ensembles and dancing, which evoked the nostalgia of the 1940’s – the war years. A lot of thought and hard work had obviously gone into this production as we were treated to some superb soloists and dance routines – we even had a dancing cow! I especially liked the Munitions factory girls‘ routine and the close harmony singing, difficult to do unaccompanied and keep in tune. The sketches were amusing and, I’m told, written by members. All the costumes styles were of the era but I think some of the girls’ hemlines were a bit too short for the 1940’s. There was no scenery to speak of except for the frontage of a red telephone box which was used to good effect as a stage entry and exit, and good use was made of props and lighting with the ubiquitous ‘atmospheric smoke’.
There is no point in trying to pick out any individual amongst the cast as each and everyone worked together superbly to make this an excellent flowing, some times amusing, trip down memory lane. If this is an example of the standard for your next production “PUTTING ON THE GLITZ”. I can’t wait.
