Pretty much as the usual original story line, known by pretty much everyone, but with some updated and tuneful specifically written songs & lyrics, making it a fresh production for Youth Theatre’s to get their teeth into. The Production Team on this occasion were in the main, first timers,
Libby Burke (Director) & Hannah Smithers (Choreographer) who took this on, took it in their stride and should be very proud of their finished article.. With the addition of two Producers, Patrick Balcombe and Sammi Offord and Musical Director Debbie Smith with her fabulous 7 piece band there was obviously a great team working together to present a really good production.
There was some very good decisions with the overall casting & staging, getting the best out of the cast within the forming of each character and also with just the right approach to the humour within the script. There’s a fine line between the necessary touches of “funny business" and it could have ended up too much like a panto however, it was very well done, it was the musical adventure that it was supposed to be and it definitely wasn’t anything like a Panto !!
There was some very clever use of projection on the gauze at the beginning of the show and the “bleed through” showing the creation of the cast and story was really effective. Some lighting however was rather a little too dark and whilst it was obvious that the team had tried to show the difference between night and day, particularly in the nursery, facial expression was lost which was a shame. Maybe next time at the start it could be dark but then raise the lighting a little and use some “Artistic Licence”; the audience will catch on, don’t worry.
All of the Characters were well cast and played their roles brilliantly, from the tiniest to the tallest you were all fab! You all looked as if you knew exactly what you were doing and you had obviously all been well rehearsed.
Just a little suggestion and constructive criticism, maybe that everyone has a couple of workshops on “projection" (not cinema projection) “Voice Projection” . I think that you all did really well to learn your lines so well, just need a little more confidence to “throw” your lines out to the audience and make them listen/hear what you have to say. But overall well done, as not everyone had a microphone.
Well done to the Stage Construction and Crew, including the Graphic Designs & Artists, Costumes & Makeup Programme, Matrons and all Front of House Team.
Sometimes it turns out that you don’t get a mentionbut with out your great support and hard work there wouldn’t be a Show, you are all amazing and greatly appreciated. Congratulations to you all, on such a great performance! You had obviously worked very hard indeed and amongst you, there some promising actors and actresses !! Wishing you every success in the future and looking forward to seeing you all again very soon.
