The music of “Madness” with a very fun yet moving script from Tim Firth gave us an evening of sheer pace energy and enthusiasm from every member of the cast.
It was slick in every aspect from the fast moving songs, to the clever design with the sets, which came in sliding form, and really kept the pace constant from the start to the finish.
Peter Norfolk as Joe Casey was super as the story unfolded and together with Lynda Western who not only played a leading role as Sarah (Joe’s girlfriend) also choreographed the show. The dance routines in the main included the entire cast, were so good. Totally in the spirit of the songs and the 1980’s a huge bonus to the success of the production and so enjoyable to watch.
Dad played by Lee Western was a shadowy figure in Joe’s mind long since dead but a very central character in the storyline. Lee had a good feel for his character and sung very well linking Joe’s rise and fall from good to bad.
I thought Mum played by Lynne Farlie gave a most warm pleasant feel to the part and all through the many up’s and downs never lost faith in her beloved son.
The “Lads” Emmo and Lewis, were played by Danny Wallis and Scott Cavill again totally in character throughout, and the dodgy Reecey played by Ed Talbot gave a clever “wheeler dealer” feel to the part. Billie and Angie the two girl friends of Sarah played by Anna Panton and Tara Edwards kept it lively and were great fun.
A great band with a super mix of instruments under talented Musical Director James Tovey who had such a terrific feel for the tempo’s and authenticity of the music.
I felt the show probably encouraged a wider audience than some shows that is always a good sign; perhaps younger people might want to join after seeing this production. Catherine did an amazing job with this production and she should be delighted with the result.
Congratulations also to the cast and crew for a fun filled evening which everyone had obviously worked so hard to get to the high standard of performance achieved.
I look forward very much to your next production.
