This is a particularly difficult report to write as my grandson aged just 9 played Oliver. I am determined to be totally dispassionate and fair and am delighted to be able to write that this was an excellent production taking into account the ages of the cast involved. Toby Sawyer (Oliver) sang excellently. In fact, quite remarkably, especially in ‘Who will Buy’ which requires five or six people singing parts. They all came in on time, keeping in tune, providing a lovely setting for a beautiful song. All the principals acted throughout with conviction extending to their body language and facial expressions. Hal Darling aged 14 gave a very convincing performance as The Artful Dodger singing and acting well and at the same time showing great support for such a young Oliver and Adrian Emmerson (Bill Sykes) proved himself to be a very strong performer but could have been even more menacing had he showed more light and shade in his voice. Georgia Brown (aged 15) gave an outstanding performance as Nancy, singing quite remarkably for one of her age but without a doubt the star of this production was Jack Winrow as Fagin. He performed one of the best Fagins I have ever seen and I’ve seen a few! My congratulations to all the crew for the smooth running of scene changes, the MD and orchestra for teaching and keeping the youngsters singing so well, the Sound Technician Brian Mercer for ensuring that every word was clearly heard but mostly the directors and choreographer for achieving such a high standard with a junior production.
