A move to a new venue is always a challenge especially when presenting a traditional show, on the floor, in the semi round with limited use of the stage, apart from some entrances and exits. But boldness paid off in this strong production. A good number of straw bales made up a major part of the permanent set, including forming an excellent “Surrey”.
Russell Fallon, who played Curly, has a voice to die for, great diction and he can act. Opposite him as Laurey was Roselyn Shallcross and their relationship was fine although I would have liked to see a bit more of her lighter side.
Karen Shepherd was a nice Aunt Eller and Andy Collinson gave us an excellent Judd Fry, his duet with Curly being note perfe Their fight scene was also well executed.
Jane Bradley (Ado Annie) worked well with a live-wire Will Parker (Richard Foot) and Ali Hakim, given an enjoyable characterisation by Neal Edlin.
Supporting characters played by Ian Start (Andrew Carnes), Hannah Midgley (Gertie Cummings), Ivor Michaels (Cord Elam) and Paul Sorfleet (Ike Skidmore) showed the strength of the Society and blended with all members of the cast who sang and performed at the right level to provide a fine, all-round show.
