It was the first time I have seen this show and what a fabulous feel-good experience. The story follows two Primary Schools in Coventry, Oakmoor and St Bernadette’s and their annual Nativity competition but it’s mainly about the friendship from schooldays of Paul, Gordon and Jennifer. When they grow up Paul and Gordon are two different kinds of teachers. Gordon in a private school becomes nasty and superior and Paul at a failing school. Jennifer goes to Hollywood to be a producer but becomes an assistant.

Paul Maddens (Dan Lord) lost his love of Christmas after Jennifer left him to follow her dream at this time of year. Dan played the part well and just reminded me of my experience of Primary School teachers.

Gordon Shakespeare (Stephen Wrathal – who was the Director of the show and replaced the original actor) He was an over-the-top baddie and was even booed by the audience like in a Pantomime which was perfect.

Jennifer (Helen Burton) Still in love with Paul she captured the pathos and stood her ground when facing up to her boss.

Mrs Bevan, Headmistress of St Bernadette’s (Jane Robinson- who stepped in at very short notice) created a very believable Head who believed all the children could flourish and when things went awry the scene with her and the mayor was funny.

Mr Poppy (Bruce Fowler) What a star, From the opening scene to the finale he was a joy to watch. I really liked Very First Day at School which had the audience on his side from the start. His energy throughout never faded and even when he was upset, he was still funny,

The others in the cast Lord Mayor (John Fisher) Critic (Alexandra Caldwell). Priest (Mark Stradling), Hollywood Producer (James Megson) Not forgetting the Teachers and parents.

The real stars of the show though were the fantastic cast of children from the snooty Oakmoor pupils to the less privileged St Bernadette pupils. They obviously thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience with a special mention to the Star of Bethlehem Orla and Rapper Benjamin. Lastly a mention for a very well-behaved dog Tilly who was a big hit with the audience.

The projection set was one of the clearest I have seen; lighting sound and staging were all done very well. Thanks to Stage Manager Sean Hodge and crew, Lighting and Sound by CS Technical. Costumes were true to the theme and very sparkly for the finale.

In fact, the whole show Sparkled and Shone. Choreographed by Thea Farman

It was a pleasure to listen to the Orchestra and singing led by Musical Director Millie Ramsden

Well done to Director Stephen Wrathal

Congratulations to all those involved.
