This well-loved production was the first for which Wezley Sebastian acted as both director and choreographer. It was very professional maintaining much of the traditional format but with little quirky additions which added to its appeal. As was to be expected the dance routines were slick and varied. The Ascot Scene was particularly memorable both for its black and white costumes with glorious hats which visually were so dramatic and the sense of tension and anticipation which was generated from the cast on stage. Higgins and Eliza (Alan and Mary-Rose Finden – husband and wife) gave first-class performances and there was definitely a strong rapport between the two of them. Pickering (Alan Backhouse) was a great foil for their antics and the three were superb in their rendition of “The Rain in Spain. For once Freddie was not a non-descript person. Stuart Frank gave him character and sang “On A Street where You Live” with conviction. Graeme Clements as Doolittle was lively and full of enthusiasm with his cronies Harry and Jamie (Gareth Billington and Robbie MacNab), all three resisting the urge to overdo their drunkenness thus giving rousing performances especially in “Get Me To the Church”. There were a few problems with microphones and the sound quality was not always consistent but neither of these detracted from the overall quality and enjoyment of this production.
