Based on the famous story, made into a film with a bestselling song. Gallery have brought it to the stage in style. A beautiful and meaningful story, of a love affair with a tragic ending. Well cast in the leads were Joe Leat as Oliver and Jenny Cavilleri as Bronwen. They were most believable and played their scenes with great compassion. Other parts were James Hayward as Jenny’s Dad who sang with feeling at the funeral scene which began the play. Helen Wheatley was Oliver’s mum and Martin Leigh played his dad with conviction. Jenny’s departed mother was Linda Wooldridge who sang the first song so beautifully. This was a busy show for the chorus, who with the expertise of Sally Scurrell moved the props, scenery and costumes throughout with ease; I thought this was superbly done. The number “Pasta” was a masterpiece as they cooked the pasta on a working stove brilliantly organised by expert stage designer Dave Borthwick. The music was by Howard Goodall famous for many productions and including the music for The Vicar of Dibley and well done to Richard Healey for his direction of the excellent orchestra.
This was a beautiful musical, superbly directed by the master Steve Wooldridge who now goes on over the country to present musicals involving young people.
Congratulations for an excellent production.
