From the very first note sung on this first night performance, it was very clear that this company had something very special to offer its audiences. There were no first night nerves in evidence but plenty of determined performances, super dance routines and professional level acting and singing…from every human and canine member of the company!
The five-piece live orchestra didn’t miss a beat! OMG you guys!
Daisy-Mae Hewett playing natural blond Elle Woods epitomised her character tottering around in a pink world haze, singing songs about pink things, cuddling her little dog - a Chihuahua called Bruiser! A polished actor and super vocalist, she fitted the lead role like a glove. Her leading men – Samuel Hardy-Wall – as Emmett Forrest and Brendan Roberts – as Warner Huntington were both substantial vocalists and convincing in their parts. Impressive CVs and their performances were proof of their experience. Together with Ian Atkinson playing Callahan you were a truly impressive trio. Gorgeous breadth and depth in those fabulous voices. And – what about Cheryl Marksford! A wonderful performer, with ‘spot on’ comic timing. Her confidence and stage presence gave Paulette Buonufonte real substance… Excellent performance.
Well-crafted numbers peppered the show, ‘Whipped into shape’ a great company number featuring talented CJ Geeves playing Brooke Wyndham. ‘Bend and Snap’, and ‘Gay or European’ showcased the tongue in cheek, fun numbers really worthy of a mention. The whole cast worked their socks off – including your four-legged members Jasmine as Bruiser Woods and Bonnie as Rufus Buonefonte. I also hope that the sound gremlins and occasional psychedelic effect on the back projection curtain were resolved in later performances - they were distractions but not spoilers of a wonderful evening. I do hope you were able to sustain that energy level for all your performances because you all certainly hit the spot on your first night. Congratulations to Jay Mount – your Director, Jaqueline Francis – your Musical Director – and Courtney Jones – your Choreographer. A super production, fantastic teamwork and knockout choreography and vocals. Your team did you proud.
