This was the final performance of a selection of one act plays taken on tour by these players to village locations around the south of Lincolnshire. They included a classic example of Victorian melodrama, followed by a very interesting short piece in which two society women of the early twentieth century hold a conversation during which they say things whilst hiding their very different true intentions. Next was an account of a young couple preparing themselves for life-changing experiences on the birth of their first child. After the interval we were treated to a play entitled ‘The Long Spoon’, written by James Coleman, a member of St Peter’s Hill Players, in which a first date turns into a disaster when a young man receives conflicting advice as to what he should and shouldn’t do. The programme concluded with David Tristram’s ‘Last Tango’ which caused much laughter as a result of the excellent delivery of lines. Without the usual facilities offered by an established theatre environment, the players coped very well. They had travelled light without sets, had only a minimum of props and few changes of costume. However, their stagecraft and characterisation were good and their diction and voice projection commendable. Their efforts provided a very pleasurable and interesting alternative form of entertainment to that of watching old black and white films broadcast on Sunday afternoon television! A valiant attempt – well done!
